Hello subscribers!
Long time no talk (or read…?), and let me start with my sincerest of apologies for not writing more over the past few months. It’s an apology only partially reflective of the truth, which is that I’ve actually been writing quite a lot, just not for this platform. I am currently about 70% done with a book manuscript that I have been wanting to finish for about two years, and while I am still committed to finishing my series on culture war (and other bits of writing for your reading pleasure), I have tried to give some level of exclusive focus to the book.
That being said, I am feeling increasingly guilty about neglecting this feed, and have come to a compromise with myself. I can both exclusively focus on the book, and offer my subscribers something along the way. Over the next few weeks/months, I will be posting excerpts from the book manuscript for you! Every month, I’ll offer 2-3 literary hors d'oeuvres, with at least one of those posts being exclusively for paid subscribers.
(By the way, if you’re not a paid subscriber, come on in, the water’s fine! However, if that’s a bit much to ask, fear not- the book will eventually be out for an affordable price and you'll get the much-more-polished version straightaway!)
The book will be titled Tenets: How To Get Along With Yourself and Others, and will serve as a kind of handbook for basic social-emotional health. Each chapter is based on a “Tenet,” an idea that- while simple and not particularly revolutionary- tends to be ignored in the day-to-day of our lives. Much of it is common sense, but to quote Voltaire, “common sense is not so common.”
I hope that you’ll enjoy the excerpts, and also that you might be interested in the book when it finally is ready for you. If you do read these little bite-sized portions, please remember they are part of my rough draft manuscript! (Part of what this means is you will have to excuse my gratuitous affection for parentheticals; this sentence serves as a case in point).
Thank you for your patience over the past few months, especially those of you who have paid to support my endless musings. It will never be lost on me how cool it is that at least part of my job is simply to think and articulate my thoughts. What a dream!
All the best to you all,
Calvin
